The Ryder Cup US team, Will It Be An Underdog Win?

The Ryder Cup this year will take place Sep 27 – Oct 2, 2016, at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska Minnesota in the United States. The Ryder Cup is always between a US team and a European team. Each team has 12 players on it and more than half the teams are chosen by points and the rest by the players, captains, and vice captains. The United States has only won two of the last 10 Ryder Cup matches played which are played every other year. That means it was 8 years ago when the US last held the cup. The Ryder Cup location rotates between Europe and America and many fans believe the positive energy of golf fans in Minnesota this year will stir the US team to victory. With the best online betting sites placing the Europeans as firm favourites, will it be an underdog victory for the US this year?

Really the best golfers by points in the US and Europe play the Ryder Cup so it’s no wonder it’s an event to watch. However this year the US team’s top three points players are collectively better than the European team’s top three points players. Of course, three out of twelve might not make the difference but they sure stand a good chance. The European caddie Ricky Elliott even joined the US team on hopes that the US will win the Ryder Cup this year. Elliott became a US citizen last year and unlike many caddies who began on an opposing side, Elliott is happy to be attending the Ryder Cup with the US team.

The US Team captain this year is Davis Love the third. He was team captain back for the Ryder Cup in 2012 in Illinois and is back to claim the cup this time. The 52-year-old Davis Love III turned pro golfer in 1985. He has 21 PGA tour wins and one PGA championship win in 1997 under his belt. Love has his own golf course he designed and developed in North Carolina called the Anderson Creek Club. More recently, he won the 2015 Wyndham Championship.

US team vice captains are Jim Furyk, Tom Lehman, Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods. Although Tiger Woods did not get in by points, in fact, the entire 2015-2016 PGA tour he was out due to a back surgery, he was voted as a vice captain. Captains and vice-captains do not actually play in the Ryder Cup. Arnold Palmer was the last playing captain and that was in 1963. With that in mind, the captains and vice captains are more of mentors and cheerleaders to get the players and fans ready to win it all.

Of course, golfers Jack Nicklaus and Phil Mickelson who have played in the Ryder Cup many times, say it’s not about winning. It is about improving, about having good relations with fellow golfers and enjoying the game of golf. Tickets are still only $35 for the first games of the Ryder Cup in Minnesota, so for anyone who wants to see the most exciting game of golf around, the Ryder Cup is the cup to see it at and it will be four years until the Ryder Cup is back in the US again.
